Today, Thursday 25 July, is World Drowning Prevention Day, in support of the 'WHO' (World Health Organization). This global advocacy event highlights the impact of drowning on families and communities with drowning being among the ten leading causes of death for children ages 5-14 years.
Sadly, we’ll be reminded of the hundreds of Australian families that lose loved ones to drowning every year. The World Health Organisation estimates that 236,000 people drown every year globally, and that drowning is among the 10 leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years.
Anyone can drown, no one shouldThere are a number of different ways to take action to prevent drowning:
Taking actionTo make the fourth annual World Drowning Prevention Day, the Monash Civic Centre will be illuminated in blue, with a banner marking World Drowning Prevention Day hung on the front wall at the Civic Centre driveway entrance.
