World Drowning Prevention Day 2024
Published on 25 July 2024
Today, Thursday 25 July, is World Drowning Prevention Day, in support of the 'WHO' (World Health Organization). This global advocacy event highlights the impact of drowning on families and communities with drowning being among the ten leading causes of death for children ages 5-14 years.
Sadly, we’ll be reminded of the hundreds of Australian families that lose loved ones to drowning every year. The World Health Organisation estimates that 236,000 people drown every year globally, and that drowning is among the 10 leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years.
Anyone can drown, no one should
There are a number of different ways to take action to prevent drowning:
- Enroll in swimming and water safety classes
- Actively supervise children and other vulnerable people in aquatic environments
- Understanding the risks, and knowing how and when to enter the water safely
- Swim in patrolled areas
- Wear a life jacket where necessary
- Be aware of potential dangers including rough weather when travelling over water.
Taking action
