ORC Pools Seasonal Close

The aquatic facilities at Oakleigh Recreation Centre are seasonal and are therefore, open from November - March (inclusive of March) each year. We would like to remind all Oakleigh Aquatics Only members, multi-visit pass holders and guests that the upcoming closure of the pools will be on Friday 31 March 2023. 

Please note, all Oakleigh Aquatics Only memberships will be automatically cancelled on Friday 31 March 2023. The other facilities in the centre will remain open for you to stay active (Gym, Group Fitness and Stadium). Should you wish to continue aquatic activities, the Aquatics services at Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre and Clayton Aquatics & Health Club will be available year round.

Why do the aquatics facilities at Oakleigh Recreation Centre close?

The seasonal dates for the Oakleigh aquatics facilities are established to cater for the period of highest demand.

Records show that days below 25 degrees in Melbourne tend to attract fewer casual attendances. We understand there are a small percentage of committed swimmers that would swim year-round if services were available.

The average maximum temperature in April drops to 21 degrees in Melbourne and generally includes 8 days of rain. On this basis, and given the high overhead operating costs and relative predictability of attendances, the viability of the outdoor pool reduces significantly from this point through to November.

We maintain operation of the outdoor pool at the Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre on reduced hours schedule throughout Term 2 and 3. Although not as convenient for all residents and customers, it is the most central aquatics facility within the City of Monash to maximise access for the greatest number for our residents.  We acknowledge that other nearby councils play an important role in the provision of access to aquatic and other recreational facilities.
