Water Safety Week

Winter Water Safety

This Term for Theme Week we are focusing on Water Safety in Winter! During the week of Monday 20 June – Sunday 26 June, we will be focusing on all kinds of safety rescues in and around water!

Swimming in Winter

5 tips to continue swimming during the winter months!

1. Minky’s Swim School pools are heated to 31 – 33 degrees all year round!

2. Swimming lessons are a great way to stay fit and active, especially throughout the winter months. Swimming can improve coordination, balance, and posture. It also helps increase your child's immune system to fight nasty viral infections.

3. Taking a break over winter can set a child back. Swimming is a confidence-based activity for children and a break in lessons means they forget skills, it impacts their confidence and greatly impacts the progress they’ve previously made.

4. Maintaining consistency: Your child is more likely to progress quickly if they are continuously practicing and building upon the skills that they have already developed.

5. Staying warm is the key! Swimming pool facilities are a very warm environment. When your child finishes their lesson make sure you get them out of their wet bathers, dry them down and dress them in super warm clothes as well as towel drying their hair before you leave the centre.

Our Watch Around Water Policy

Children need supervision around water! Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children under five years of age and almost half of all injuries recorded at public swimming pools involves children.

The Watch Around Water campaign is aimed at educating customers about active supervision and encouraging parents/guardians to take on the responsibility of this role within our centres assists aquatic staff to promote safe supervision practices and provide a safe venue for the community to participate in sport and recreation.

Public swimming pools continue to be the safest environment for our community to swim. At Active Monash we value you and your child’s safety and as a result, have reviewed our Water Around Water policy and updated it to include the wearing of wristbands for children 5-9 years old.

Children participating in lessons under the supervision of an instructor will not be required to wear a wristband during the lesson, however, parents are still required to supervise their child poolside during the lesson and should be easily and quickly identified. Please see reception or a lifeguard to get a wristband if you wish to swim before or after your lesson.

Children under 5 years old (0-4 years old):

• Must be within arm’s reach and constantly supervised by a parent/guardian.

• The parent/guardian is to accompany the child in the water and remain within arm's reach of the child at all times.

• If the parent is unable to supervise the under 5-year-old in the water, the under 5-year-old is restricted to the toddler's pool area only (MARC only).

• The parent/guardian must supervise the under 5-year-old from the side of the toddler's pool (MARC only).

Children under 10 years old (5-9 years old):

• Must be wearing a WAW wristband while recreation swimming, which is issued at reception.

• Will not be admitted without an appropriate parent/guardian. The parent guardian must be 16 years and over and adhere to all conditions of entry.

• Must be constantly supervised by a parent/guardian while in the aquatic area of the centre.

• The parent/guardian must position themselves to have a clear view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them and the child.
